Event & Session Assistant
Description
Workshop assistants keep the workshop organized and operational. They make sure all tools and equipment are in working order and help with keeping track of what needs to be replaced or replenished. Workshop assistants also work with Prof. Granzow and Prof. Guravich to brainstorm and implement improvements to the Workshop
Qualifications
Workshop assistants must:
Be an actively enrolled as a student at the University of Michigan
Be a PAT major or else have successfully completed one PAT course within a year of employment
Have excellent technical and troubleshooting skills
Be able to learn complex technical tasks and systems quickly
Be able to work independently without frequent guidance
Be honest, responsible, punctual, consistent, and have excellent attention to detail
Have strong communication skills and ability to respond to emails and messages promptly
Optional bonus skills:
Has an engineering background
Knows how to correctly use various shop tools
Are proficient with:
Power tools
Soldering
FDM 3D printers
Laser cutters
Craft cutters
Sewing and embroidery machines
Time commitment
1 to 2 hours per week (additional hours possible)
Generally consistent weekly schedule
Pay
$15 an hour
General Responsibilities
Complete tasks outlined in workshop checklist.
Work on long-term projects such as labeling and component sorting
Sweep and vacuum floor and work surfaces
Assist students with their projects
Maintain a safe working environment at all times
Ensure proper PPE is worn by yourself and others when necessary
Run the laser cutter for students who need it
Work with workshop stakeholders to plan and implement improvements to the space
Maintain a running inventory list and notify the studio coordinator when components or tools need to be replenished or replaced
Collect requests from students and faculty on what kinds of tools and components they need for a project
Submit a brief report of tasks completed at the end of each work session
Attend a training session at the beginning of employment
Additional Responsibilities
Every semester, each assistant will undertake one major organization or documentation project. When other regular tasks have been completed, assistants will utilize their remaining time to work on these tasks. Studio Coordinator will finalize details about the nature of project.
